Stadsschouwburg

Stadsschouwburg

The Stadsschouwburg is one of the most beautiful buildings in Amsterdam and home to the Municipal Theatre of Amsterdam. The splendid Baroque building is located at the Leiseplein in the very centre of Amsterdam and is a must see if visiting Amsterdam.

The present day Stadsschouwburg was built at the end of the 19th century on a site of the 18th century city theatre that burned down in 1892. The theater shows mostly plays of the Dutch classical and contemporary authors in Dutch language but English performances can be seen from time to time as well. In addition to theatre, the Stadsschouwburg often also hosts musical and dance performances.

Guided tours are available if being interested in the theater’s interior and history. If planning to visit a show it is recommendable to book seats in advance because the Stadsschouwburg is one of the most popular and visited theaters in the city of Amsterdam.
